Curriculum Overview:

         Title: We The People, published by Houghton Mifflin

         Theme-based curriculum for grades K5 - 3

         The series is directly correlated to the current New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

         Each grade level includes a host of supplementary materials such as big books, related literature, and textbook chapters on tape, CD-ROMS and web-based resources.

         The publisher uses an integrated curricular approach including reading, language arts, mathematics, science and technology to insure transfer of skills.

Suggested Instructional Time Frame:

         Ninety minutes per week

         3 days x 30 minutes

Instructional Suggestions:

         Collaborate with Library Media Specialist to plan research-based projects and integrate literature to enrich instruction.

         Collaborate with Technology Specialist to integrate technology strategies and web-based resources.

         Collaborate with Science Specialist to integrate science related instruction.

         Integrate concepts of language arts mathematics, science and technology to insure transfer of skills across the curriculum.

         Use social studies content to teach reading comprehension, vocabulary and phonics development.

«     Use social studies themes as writing prompts and guide students' application of the writing process to written assignments.

     Provides students with opportunities to demonstrate mastery through oral, written
and visual presentations.
