PHILOSOPHY
The
Physical Education program at
Students
are encouraged to perform to the best of their ability while recognizing their
physical limitations, as well as the physical limitations of others. We strive to encourage good team work, sportsmanship, and
cooperation while participating in class activities. Also we try to promote positive self esteem
by challenging each student to achieve their maximum potential in all areas of
sport and fitness.
GOALS
Ø
To develop an understanding of and an
appreciation for the benefits of physical education.
Ø
To demonstrate self-management skills and apply
safety principles.
Ø
To learn and apply movement concepts and skills
that foster participation in physical activities throughout life.
Ø
To learn and apply health-related fitness
concepts.
CURRICULUM
OBJECTIVES
At
the conclusion of the Physical Education course, the student will:
Ø
Show increased flexibility and muscular
strength.
Ø
Demonstrate improvement in the areas of agility
and balance.
Ø
Show improvement in hand eye coordination.
Ø
Analyze and apply movement concepts,
biomechanical principle, and rhythm to independently
learn, assess, refine, and combine movement skills used in physical activities.
Ø
Apply the principles of physiology, kinesiology
and psychology to improve personal performance in physical activity.
Ø
Discuss the physical and psychological benefits
derived from health-related fitness activities.
Ø
Describe how sports injuries can be prevented,
and demonstrate safety during physical activities.
Ø
Design and evaluate a personal fitness plan,
taking into consideration fitness, health and nutritional status, age,
interests, and abilities, and discuss how the plan may be adapted to injury,
illness, or aging.
Ø
Explain the history and origin of physical
education activities.
Ø
Understand and demonstrate proper use of rules,
regulations and safety procedures
for physical education activities.
Ø
Demonstrate the appropriate skills required to
actively participate in the physical education activities.
Ø
Understand and demonstrate techniques, including
offensive and defensive strategies used in the physical education activities.
Ø
Choose and participate in two of the following
physical education activities per marking period:
Aerobics. Badminton,
Basketball, Bowling, Dance, Field Hockey, Floor Hockey, Football, Frisbee,
Frisbee Golf, Golf, Horseshoes, Juggling, Lacrosse, Rec. Games, Soccer,
Softball, Speed Ball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball,
Walking, Weights Training, Wrestling, Yoga, President’s Physical Fitness

PROFICIENCIES - ROLE OF THE STUDENT
All
students in the Physical Education course are expected to;
Ø
Follow all written and established locker room,
and gymnasium routines, practices,
and procedures as designated by the district curriculum, student handbook and the classroom teacher.
Ø
Meet attendance, grading, and discipline
requirements as listed in the Burlington City Student handbook.
Ø
Be responsible for issued lock, locker and all
personal possessions.
Ø
Dress in the required physical education uniform.
Ø
Participate to the best of their individual
ability in all phases of the physical education class.
Ø
Demonstrate a positive attitude and good
sportsmanship in all competitive situation during participation in the physical education
activities.
Ø
Accept and value the culture, customs, and behaviors of
others with respect.
Ø
Demonstrate knowledge of physical education
activities through written exams.
Ø
Complete a written make up assignment for all
absences from class.
Ø
Use technology (internet) to obtain information
required for make up assignments.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment
will measure student proficiency at various achievement levels and will
include, but not limited to the following:
Ø
Class attendance
Ø
Class participation.
Ø
Class preparation.
Ø
Skill development in the physical education
activities.
Ø
Written make up assignments.
Ø
General attitude and appropriate behavior.
Ø
Written tests and exams.
