COURSE STATEMENT

This course is for the serious and dedicated art student that chooses to work on their portfolio either for preparation for the Advanced Placement Art course or in preparation for applying to a specific college or art school as an art major. Students will be encouraged to choose an individualistic approach to all assignments and projects. All mediums will be available and students may select one each marking period for their concentration. Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to participate in various contests and exhibits. This will allow students to be exposed to and compete with other student artists. Students may also be involved in projects throughout the school and community to enhance and enrich their environment. Their contributions to the overall art program should influence other students to pursue further education in art.

 

COURSE PROFICIENCIES - SKILLS -

Ø      To enable students to develop a style that is unique and personal.

Ø      To influence students to be true to their artistic preferences and mediums.

Ø      To emphasize "artistic license" and allow students to make choices of subject matters and mediums.

Ø      To instruct students to keep a sketchbook/journal to record all rough drafts, notes and thoughts.

Ø      To strengthen the student's knowledge of various art history periods, artists and styles.

Ø      To build the student's art vocabulary.

Ø      Students will gain confidence in identifying their own artistic style.

Ø      Students will become more responsible in the maintenance of the art room, materials and mediums.

Ø      Students will share in the planning, displaying and exhibiting of art work in the school and community to instill a sense of pride in their work and the work of their peers.

Ø      Students will be encouraged to always strive to be their most creative and to exceed their level of ability.

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES

Student portfolios will be evaluated according to their ability level as well as the progress that is made each marking period

 

In addition to the portfolio requirements, students will be evaluated on the following:

Ø      Class participation

Ø      Class cooperation

Ø      Serious approach to projects and assignments

Ø      Success in completion of projects

Ø      Attendance/lateness

Ø      Overall effort put forth

Ø      Critiques, tests and exams
