PHILOSOPHY

This course is designed for the serious art student that has excelled in prior art courses and meets all prerequisites.  Students that wish to advance their exploration of both individuality as well as achievement in a variety of mediums while incorporating the elements and principles of design are encouraged to take this course.  Students will follow all of the guidelines set forth to produce a portfolio on the level of a first year college student. Throughout the studio experience, students will be guided in pursuing the objectives of their chosen portfolio to the highest level of their creative ability. Portfolios will be submitted for final evaluation in the spring semester.

 

GOALS

The goals set forth in A.P. Studio Art are as follows:

Ø       To instill confidence and skill in the creative level of the student

Ø       To maintain a high level of motivation in the search for the students selected area of concentration.

Ø       To develop the students individuality and level of ability to create unique works of art.

Ø       To produce art work on par with a first year college student.

 

 

COURSE PROFICIENCIES

Students will be introduced to the three types of portfolios that may be submitted. They will be presented with the components and requirements of each portfolio.  Students will be guided to select the portfolio that best relates to their individual talent.

 

DRAWING PORTFOLIO

Ø      Section I - Quality

v     5 actual works that excel in concept, composition and execution

Ø      Section II – Concentration

v     12 slides; some may be details.  A series of works organized around a compelling visual  concept in drawing.

Ø      Section III- Breadth

v     12 slides; one slide each of 12 different works.  Works that demonstrate a variety of concepts, media and approaches

 

2-D DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Ø      Section I – Quality

v     5 actual works that excel in concept, composition and execution

Ø      Section II- Concentration

v     12 slides; some may be details a series of works organized around a compelling visual concept in 2-D Design.

Ø      Section III-Breadth

v     12 slides; one slide each of 12 different works. Works that demonstrate a wide variety of concepts, media and approaches

 

3-D Design Portfolio

Ø      Section I- Quality

v     10 slides consisting of 2 views each of 5 works. Works that excel in concept, composition and execution

Ø      Section II- Concentration

v     12 slides; some may be details or second views

v     A series of works organized around a compelling visual concept in 3-D design

Ø      Section III- Breadth

v     16 slides; 2 slides each of 8 different works

v     Works that demonstrate a variety of concepts, media and approaches

Ø      All students will have knowledge of the various historical, social and cultural influences that have influenced their artwork.

Ø      All students will understand the design skills that enable them to create art.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Ø      Drawing Portfolio

v     This portfolio will require the students to expand their knowledge of drawing issues as well as drawing media.  Students will be required to complete a broad range of class drawing assignments including self- portraits and still lives.  Students will be urged to be experimental and take risks with the media to create more individualistic drawings.  In addition, students will keep an ongoing sketchbook and complete short term and long- term homework assignments.  Students will be encouraged to strengthen their knowledge through participation in various class trips to museums, exhibits and galleries. 

 

Ø      2-D Design Portfolio

v     This portfolio will require students to select work that primarily focuses on the use of the elements and principles of design.  Students will be required to create artwork using a wide range of media and styles and art forms.  Assignments will be given pertaining to graphic design, digital design, collage, photography, illustration, printmaking, painting, etc.  All work done in class and at home must be original and may not be copied from any other source other than the student’s own original work.  Students must complete all class and homework assignments as well as keep a sketchbook.  Students will be encouraged to expand  their knowledge through participation in various class trips to museums, exhibits and galleries.

 

Ø      III 3-D Design Portfolio

v     This portfolio would be recommended to the student that has a keen understanding of how to integrate the elements and principles of design into a truly unique 3-D work of art.  The student should have prior experiences in a wide range of 3-D media.  Students that have been successful in ceramics and sculpture are most likely to choose this portfolio.  Craftsmanship as well and unique individuality should be woven into all artwork produced.  Students will be encouraged to identify the mediums that best express these qualities while completing this course.

In addition to meeting the requirements set forth for the portfolio, students are also actively involved throughout the year in a wide range of creative, educational endeavors.  Students are required to attend the monthly field trips to museums, exhibits and galleries.

The district wide “Celebration of the Arts” requires all A. P. Studio Art students to do an individual display of their work.  Students participate in local art shows as well as the County and State Teen Arts Festival.  Students contribute their talent to improving the climate at the high school by exposing all students to the visual arts through showcase displays throughout the school year.  The A.P. Studio experiences strives to instill a feeling of achievement within the students that enables them to take the next step in their personal journey.

 

 

EVALUATION TECHNIQUES

 

Student’s portfolios will be evaluated according to their individual level of ability as well as the progress and growth each marking period.  In addition to the requirements set forth, the student’s will also be evaluated on the following:

 

Ø      Class participation and co-operation

Ø      Serious approach to projects and assignments

Ø      Success in completion of projects

Ø      Attendance and lateness

Ø      Overall effort put forth

Ø      Critiques, tests and exams

 

Student’s work is self /class critiqued bi-monthly using the following rubric:

 

Ø      Ability level

Ø      Conceptual Creativity

Ø      Use of materials

Ø      Craftsmanship

 

It is the intention of the teacher to provide the student with on-going motivation, support, assistance and encouragement to achieve the goals of the A.P. Studio Course.  With the completion of this course, students should have gained an elevated awareness of who they are, where they are going and what they plan to do with the rest of their young lives.

This course serves as the ground work for the dedication and discipline that is so important in striving to attain any goal set forth as they continue their journey
